HERE'S THE REAL REASON WHY KATHERINE HEIGL LEFT THE GREY’S ANATOMY SHOW
Grey's Anatomy is an American medical drama tv series
that debuted on ABC on March 27, 2005. The show revolves around the journeys of
surgical interns as they evolve into experienced doctors, all the while
navigating the complexities of their personal and professional lives.
The show has aired for nineteen seasons and has won
several awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series –
Drama in 2006. However, despite being praised for its diverse cast and for
tackling social issues, the show has also had some rough bumps, forcing fans to
say goodbye to some of their favorite characters.
In this article, we’ll be discussing why Katherine Heigl left
Grey’s Anatomy and how her departure affected the show.
Katherine Heigl who played Dr. Isabelle “Izzie” Stevens is
one of the original casts and the biggest breakout stars of Grey’s Anatomy. The
fans of the show took a special liking to her following her astonishing
performance that brought the character to life, and the chemistry she had with
Justin Chamber’s Alex Karev.
This was why it came as a shock to the fans of their
on-screen love story when it was announced she was leaving the show in 2010. And
it got everyone wondering: what was the reason for her sudden departure?
Although this wasn’t the first nor the last time a cast member
abruptly left Grey’s Anatomy, several factors contributed to Katherine
Heigl’s departure from the show. However, the biggest offense happened in the
aftermath of her Emmy nomination, when she demanded that the Academy withdraw
her nomination.
In an interview, Katherine Heigl explained that she didn’t
deserve the nomination because she felt she wasn’t given the material in that
season to warrant an Emmy nomination. And to maintain the integrity of the Academy
she had to withdraw her name, to avoid taking away the opportunity from a more
deserving actress.
However, this didn’t sit well with Grey’s Anatomy’s showrunner
Shonda Rhimes who decided to drop her after branding her as “difficult to work
with”. This wasn’t the only reason by the way, as there had been instances
where Katherine Heigl publicly criticized the show because of its absurd
filming hours.
In an interview in 2020, Katherine Heigl reflected on her feud
with Shonda Rhimes and admitted she regretted the heightened drama that
followed her departure.
As for her character, at the end of the 2019-2020 season,
Shonda Rhimes finally gave her a happy ending when fans learned that Izzie was
raising twins on her own and they belonged to Alex.
