THE RINGS OF POWER vs HOUSE OF THE DRAGON
In today’s article, we’ll be discussing why Amazon Prime’s
The Rings of Power, TROP, keeps receiving unabashed hate from the fans of HBO
Max’s House of the Dragon, HOTD.
Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a
fantasy television series developed by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay, based on
the novel The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien.
Set a thousand years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the
Rings, TROP begins during a time of peace in Middle-earth and crescendos to the
events that lead to the forging of the Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark
Lord Sauron, the character arch of Galadriel, and the fall of the kingdom of
Numenor.
House of the Dragon on the other hand is a prequel of Game
of Thrones. It was created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for the
streaming platform HBO Max.
House of the Dragon is set about hundred years after the
Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen conquest, and nearly two hundred
years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Based on the descriptions, you can already tell that both
movies even though under the fantasy genre, are very dissimilar from each
other. Yet they were compared by fans, why?
Well, here’s why. House of The Dragon was released on August
21, 2022, and The Rings of Power on September 2, 2022. Released in the same
timeframe I’d say it was pretty obvious that the two would always be compared
since they were at loggerheads for viewership.
Also, even with the bigger budget The Rings of Power had,
House of the Dragon had more fans. And to make sure that their show dominated,
there was a conspiracy theory that these fans review bombed TROP. But was that
what really happened?
Well, why there might be some truth in that, The Rings of
Power wasn’t exactly a good show (not that it justifies the hate it got from
HOTD fans anyway) The show simply had bad writing, annoying characters, and
awful dialogues.
This is the reason why House of the Dragon had more
viewership, awards, Rotten Tomatoes score, Average audience score, and IMDB
ratings than The Rings of Power. TROP was so awful that it had an average
audience score of 38%.
In conclusion, The Rings of Power wasn’t just hated by House
of the Dragons fans because it wasn’t on par with the latter or because it had
no cultural impact like HOTD. It was disliked generally because it was a bad
show that felt forced.
