THE NEXT MARVEL EVENT – SHOULD SECRET INVASION BE A MOVIE OR SERIES?

SECRET INVASION POSTER

Secret Invasion is the ninth series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, MCU, based on the Marvel Comics of the same title. Created by Kyle Bradstreet, the film is set to release on June 21, 2023.

According to its synopsis, Secret Invasion is set in the present-day MCU, where Nick Fury recruits Everette Ross, Maria Hill, and Talos to stop a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls who are on a clandestine mission to infiltrate Earth in positions of power.

Led by Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) as the main character, the show also stars other actors such as Emilia Clarke, Martin Freeman, Colbie Smulders, Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and many more.

Despite all these goodies, there is only one issue with the show. Secret Invasion is perceived by fans as an Avengers-level movie, but it felt like a major letdown when Marvel’s President, Kevin Feige, announced that it was going to be a Disney+ show.

Dare I say, I understand the reason for this reaction as there have been fluctuations in the quality of Marvel’s Disney+ shows. However, there is also a very good reason why Marvel’s boss, chose to adapt Secret Invasion into a tv show instead of a movie.

SECRET INVASION COMIC COVER

According to 2010 The Mighty Avengers: Secret Invasion comic, Issue 12, where the Secret Invasion saga is adapted from, the comic opens with the X-men team fighting Skrulls after they learn about a faction of Skrulls that is trying to infiltrate Earth. Later on, in the comic, the story crescendos, and the Avengers get involved in fighting the Skrulls.

Although it’s impossible to adapt all the events of the comic Secret Invasion into the series (considering most of the characters involved aren’t part of the MCU yet), it’s worth noting that the story about Secret Invasion is so delicate that it would’ve felt rushed if it was packed into one movie, and it would hurt the story.

The concept of Secret Invasion is so enormous that if it should be adapted into a movie, it would be a saga of its own. However, since Marvel is occupied with the Multiverse saga (following the end of the Infinity saga) it only makes sense that Secret Invasion be adapted into a tv show to do the story justice.

Besides, the aim of cinematic universes is to go bigger with their stories by increasing the stakes, so it wouldn’t make sense for the MCU to go from the Infinity saga to the Multiverse saga, and then Secret Invasion, if they indeed decided to honor it by making it a saga of its own. It would be underwhelming.
